Understanding the nasal septum
The nasal septum divides the nose into two chambers. It is made of cartilage and bone and lined by a thin membrane called the mucosa, which protects the structure and helps keep the nasal passages moist.
How a deviation can affect breathing
A deviated septum can block one or both nasal passages, contributing to nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, and sinus issues. Septoplasty straightens the septum to create a clearer path for airflow.

The procedure
Septoplasty involves carefully reshaping the cartilage and bone of the septum. It may be performed on its own or combined with another treatment, such as balloon sinuplasty, depending on the individual’s needs.
Septoplasty may be performed using an in-office approach with local anesthesia. Discuss the appropriate setting, anesthesia, and recovery expectations during your own consultation.
